Welcome to the June edition of the Orchard Clips newsletter.

We start this month with a fantastic collection of newly-uncovered footage from Iran in the years prior to the 1979 revolution. The footage includes a wide variety of subjects, from excerpts from Iranian feature films, to TV commercials for tinned vegetables. There are musical performances from famous singers as well as celebrations of the 2,500 anniversary of the Persian Empire in 1971. The collection paints a portrait of a nation on the cusp of seismic changes.

In many countries the school year is coming to an end. This is a time for teachers and lecturers to take a well earned break before thoughts turn again to a new year and the curricula and resources to teach a new cohort of students. Orchard Clips has a wide selection of clips ideal for education. These clips include both raw footage on subjects including History, Natural Sciences, Geography and Sustainability and curricula specific educational videos from partner Makematic.

Last week, the Orchard Clips team had the pleasure of attending two major events in the archive industry calendar: footageMarketplace and the FOCAL Awards.

At footageMarketplace, we connected with archive producers, researchers, and partners, presenting our expanding Middle East collection and exploring new opportunities for collaboration. The seminar programme was a real highlight, offering a rare opportunity to hear directly from archive producers about the challenges they face and the creative solutions they’re developing.

The following evening, we joined the celebration of outstanding archival storytelling at the FOCAL Awards. From compelling documentaries to inventive uses of historical footage, it was inspiring to see such impactful work, as well as industry figures recognised. These stories continue to highlight the essential role archives play in shaping visual narratives.

A big thank you to everyone who took the time to speak with us. We look forward to building on these conversations in the months ahead.
